Leaf Peeping Around Durango: Peak Fall Colors Coming Soon!
Based on years of tracking Fall foliage patterns in Southwest Colorado and looking at current trends in higher elevations, Silverton is expected to reach its peak this weekend.

I never fully appreciated Fall until I moved to Colorado, and now it is my absolutely favorite time of year. I love seeing the vibrant yellows (and sometimes reds) in and around Durango.
Your Fall Color Timeline: When and Where to Go
Based on years of tracking Fall foliage patterns in Southwest Colorado and looking at current trends in higher elevations, Silverton is expected to reach its peak this weekend. If you have the time, the drive from Durango to Ouray will be spectacular. Unfortunately, the weather isn't looking great this weekend, so making the drive on this Wednesday or Thursday might be best if you can swing it.
This Weekend (September 26-28)
- Highway 550 between Durango & Silverton
- Silverton
- Red Mountain Pass
- Highway 550 between Silverton & Ouray
Late September to early October (September 26 - October 5)
- La Plata Canyon
Mid-October
- Missionary Ridge
- In-town Durango
What could change this timeline or make the peak window narrow? Deep freezes can damage the leaves, and strong winds or rain will make the leaves fall off faster đŸ˜¦
The Million Dollar Highway Experience
The drive from Durango to Silverton along Highway 550, famously known as the Million Dollar Highway, transforms into Colorado's most spectacular fall corridor this time of year. The route climbs through multiple elevation zones, each offering its own color palette. From the golden aspens shimmering in the morning light to the rust-red scrub oak painting the hillsides, every mile reveals new photogenic vistas.
Pro tip: Start early to catch the morning light filtering through the aspen groves. The contrast between the golden leaves and the dramatic San Juan Mountain peaks creates photography magic.
Beyond the Beaten Path
While everyone flocks to the Million Dollar Highway (and rightfully so), don't overlook these hidden gems that peak a little later than the higher elevations:
La Plata Canyon offers a more intimate leaf-peeping experience with fewer crowds. The canyon's microclimate often extends the color season, giving it a wider peak window than Silverton.
Missionary Ridge rewards hikers and drivers alike with panoramic views of hillsides painted in autumn hues. Peak aspen colors persist well into mid-October, offering a second chance for those who miss the early peak.
Making the Most of Leaf Peeping
- Start early to avoid traffic and capture the best light
- Leaf peep on a weekday to avoid traffic, if you can
- Pack layers, as mountain weather can change quickly
- Consider the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for a unique perspective on the Fall colors
- If leaf peeping in Silverton, drive along 15th Street (aka Scenic Drive) for classic aspen grove views
The aspens are golden, and the mountain vistas are calling. See you out there!
